Activision granted a patent that basically manipulates players towards microtransactions

Activision has just been granted a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a new kind of matchmaking system that the company has been repeatedly filing for more than four years.

If they don't buy it, then their data will reflect that they have not purchased it.

It also promotes items it deems more likely to be purchased in any given circumstance, and when purchases are made, puts players into situations where a purchased item is highly effective.

After all, once a player begins to notice that each one of their matches always showcases an item that they wanted, it will become apparent what the game intends to happen. This kind of analytical data, on what players will and will not do, is quite vital to publishers in order to find new avenues with which to generate revenue from those players. It's basically a way to reward players who buy content and subtly punish those who don't via the game's built-in matchmaking algorithms.

Another example given would be a junior player who, through his gaming profile, is determined as wanting to be a sniper. In this manner, the microtransaction engine may leverage the matchmaking abilities described herein to influence purchase decisions for game-related purchases. "It has not been implemented in-game". Similarly, microtransaction engine 128 may identify items offered for sale, identify marquee players that use or possess those items, and match the marquee players with other players who do not use or possess those items. Recently there have been worries about loot boxes in games, and the models that might attempt to manipulate users into purchasing them.

Patent 9,789,406 was approved on October 17th, 2017, with the title of 'System and method for driving microtransactions in multiplayer video games, ' and can be found right here.

"Doing so may enhance a level of enjoyment by the player for the game-related purchase, which may encourage future purchases", according to the patent. It details how multiplayer matches will be configured to match certain players with one another and how it will entice them to purchase in-game items.

While the practice is for first-person shooter games, Rolling Stone alleges that the system could potentially be used over a wide range of different game styles owned by the company.

When asked about the patent, however, Activision claims that the technology is not in play with any of the games that are now in the market.

We've also reached out to Activision and will update the post if and when we get a response.
