Viking Woman: Warrior, Leader, Gamer

With the help of osteology and DNA testing, archaeologists and historians have revealed that the remains of a "powerful military leader" buried with weapons and horses are that of a woman.

Because of this - and because no such high-ranking female Viking has been discovered before - most researchers assumed the body was male.

Kjellstrom noticed that the cheekbones were finer than that of a man, and the hip bones were typically feminine. DNA retrieved from the skeleton demonstrates that the individual carried two X chromosomes and no Y chromosome.

Furthermore, the researchers write in their journal article that.

The skeleton itself has always been suspected to belong to a woman - if you've ever studied the human skeleton, it's pretty clear, just by looking at the pelvis, who is which - but this batch of genetic tests confirms it.

Romanticized depiction of a Viking woman, 1905, by Andreas Bloch. The skeleton's genetic material shows the female warrior is closely related to today's northern Europeans, particularly southern Swedes, but the results of the chemical analysis could not conclusively say whether she was local to her burial site during her life, although the scientists were leaning toward a mobile person who had moved to Birka later in life. "As long as the sex is male, the weaponry in the grave not only belong to the interred but also reflects his status as warrior, whereas a female sex has raised doubts".

Donald Trump pledges resources for Florida in Hurricane Irma aftermath
Mr Scott told ABC's "This Week" programme that he spoke with the President yesterday morning. "We've all been working together". Trump has offered the full resources of the federal government to Florida and the affected states.

Popular TV series showed us how Viking women were as fierce and fearless as men, and now there's more scientific evidence in support of this claim.

Unearthed in the 1880s, the 10th century Viking was a figure from Richard Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries: an elite warrior buried with a sword, an ax, a spear, arrows, a knife, two shields, and a pair of warhorses.

In the case of this female warrior, the study explained, her grave was "prominently placed on an elevated terrace between the town and a hillfort", right near Birka's defensive fortress.

Viking armies may have had high ranking female officers at the battlefield, say scientists who conducted a DNA analysis of the skeletal remains of a warrior and found that it was a woman.

Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson of Uppsala University said Monday the tests show "it is definitely a woman".
