US Flies Bomber Near North Korean Border in Latest Show of Force

"This mission is a demonstration of US resolve and a clear message that the President has many military options to defeat any threat", said Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White.

The Pentagon says it was the farthest north of the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea the USA has flown in the 21st century.

But this was the furthest north of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) any United States fighter or bomber aircraft has flown off North Korea's coast in this century, Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said.

The bomber flight and quake came at the end of a week that saw a blistering war of words between Kim and Trump, with the USA leader using his maiden speech at the United Nations General Assembly to warn that Washington would "totally destroy" the North if America or its allies were threatened.

Kim's remarks on Friday followed Trump's remarks at the UN General Assembly that he may "have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea", deriding Kim as "Rocket Man".

Mr Ri described Mr Trump as "a mentally deranged person full of megalomania" who is holding "the nuclear button", and said "Trump himself is on a suicide mission".

The Pentagon emphasised that Japano and South Korea were not involved in Saturday's, operation. Ri retorted that Trump himself was on a "suicide mission" after the USA president said Kim was on such a mission.

Earlier this month, North Korea conducted its most powerful nuclear test to date, drawing stiffer United Nations sanctions.

At the United Nations on Tuesday, President Donald Trump said that he would "totally destroy" North Korea if the USA was forced to defend itself or its allies.

Saturday's jet patrol comes after officials and experts concluded a small natural disaster registered near North Korea's nuclear test site was likely not man-made.

"The growing intensity of activity is created to send a message to Kim Jong-un that the USA wants North Korea to turn in a different direction and that the U.S. has the power to retaliate against him if he persists", he told Al Jazeera from Washington, DC.

China is North Korea's most important trading partner, and one of its only sources of hard currency.

The US and South Korea are now conducting a series of joint drills close to the Korean border.
