United fans urged to drop 'racist' chants

The chant has been condemned by numerous United fan groups, and Lukaku hopes the whole controversy can be consigned to history.

Lukaku's view comes a few days after news emerged that Kick It Out, the equality and discrimination organisation within football, were condemning the chant and urged United to put an end to the song.

A Kick It Out spokesman told The Times: "The lyrics used in the chant are offensive and discriminatory".

"We have contacted Manchester United regarding the issue and will be working closely with them and the FA to ensure it is addressed swiftly".

UNITED fans have vowed to carry on singing their Romelu Lukaku song, despite allegations of racism.

The chant was heard midway through United's 4-1 win over Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, despite the club promising to take action against individuals caught participating in the stands.

The Belgian's link-up play was also called into question amid suggestions Lukaku's first touch was too prone to let him down, but the step up to United has so far been seamless for the former Everton striker. "Racist stereotypes are never acceptable, irrespective of any intention to show support for a player", said Kick It Out. "The perpetrators can expect to face punishment".

"We'll sing what we want" would get a heartier rendition on a night where it is understood there were no arrests or complaints to the Greater Manchester Police.

He said: "I don't think the chant is racist".
