Travel advisory: Irma causes major disruptions at airports

Meanwhile, petroleum analysts are watching Hurricane Irma, which could hit Florida on Sunday. It previously was assessed as a Category 5 but has weakened.

The gas availability tracking system on the app went live on August 31 in the midst of Hurricane Harvey.

Recalling the recent devastation in Houston, Texas, by Tropical Storm Harvey, some Florida residents told WLBZ2 they were taking no chances by waiting to see what will happen. American Airlines added 3,600 seats and 16 flights out of Miami. Kaplan, who is a Florida native himself, says the prices are due to website algorithms that automatically adjust fares in real time.

The final flight departing from Florida was scheduled to land at T.F. Green Airport at 9:15 p.m. Saturday, but that flight was one of many canceled in the wake of Hurricane Irma. In the West Palm Beach-Fort Pierce region, that number is about 56%. Either way, "it's not ideal", she said. Other carriers, including United and Delta, also said they would cap fares for people trying to escape Hurricane Irma.

The Pompas, originally from Appleton, moved to Bradenton, Florida after James was transferred for his job at Pierce Manufacturing.

"You have this really unsafe storm coming, and all these people are trying to do the right and responsible thing to leave so they don't put other people's lives in danger, like first responders, and it makes it so hard with all these added obstacles".

Las Vegas flights canceled as Irma heads into Georgia
Also in Atlanta, the city's transit system has suspended all bus and rail service ahead of the weather conditions caused by Irma. After pounding Florida, Irma is heading north to Georgia and the Carolinas as it continues to affect flights along the path.

So far, traffic had been OK as they headed east toward Orlando and into Georgia, mostly driving around 50 miles per hour.

"I don't think airlines would be callous or stupid enough to be consciously jacking up fares", said George Hobica, a consumer advocate at SmarterTravel.com. But when asked whether he was scared of the storm, he said "not at all" in Spanish and said it was more a matter of convenience. "Everybody is kind of rallying together". So, she spent the afternoon on the phone with a travel agent instead.

Nearly the entire state will feel the storm's impact.

But Sylvia Constantinidis, a 27-year resident of Miami, told ABC News she has made a decision to stay in the city during the storm.

Officials with Southwest Airlines said, "service to/from each of the cities below will resume once it's safe to do so". "If you have any damage or water getting into your house and you have to wait for two or three weeks to come back, then your house will be completely damaged by the time you come back to Florida".

Nevertheless, forecasters warned that its hurricane-force winds were so wide they could reach from coast to coast, testing the country's third most populous state, which has undergone rapid development and passed more stringent hurricane-proof building codes in the last decade or so. Airlines also need to pay refunds to customers who don't want to fly at a later date or get a credit for a future flight.
