'Slender Man' trial underway in Wisconsin for Anissa Weier

Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser were both 12 when they allegedly knifed Payton Leutner in a frenzied attack and left her for dead in woods to please the creepy figure.

Weier, now 15, already pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree intentional homicide in a deal with prosecutors in August and she could now be sent to a mental institution for up to 25 years, although a three-year term had been suggested in the deal.

Weier's attorney said she was suffering from a mental illness at the time of the stabbing at a Waukesha park, and should not be found criminally responsible. A jury trial on her case, which began Monday, was set to determine whether Weier was mentally ill when she committed the crime. She believed he would hurt her and her family if she didn't help commit murder.

One of the girl's former classmates, who was also interested in Slender Man, told the court she had discovered how to become the character's servant - by killing a friend.

Because the jury found Weier mentally ill, she is considered not responsible for her actions in the attack. Each of the three young ladies were 12-years of age at the time.

"I know now it's just teenagers who really like scaring people and making them believe false things", Weier told Waukesha Detective Michelle Trussoni. While Weier was dealing with her parents' divorce, teachers began noticing symptoms of depression, he said.

Slender Man first appeared on the internet in 2009. Van Rybroek is the second court-appointed expert to evaluate Weier's insanity plea.

A second psychologist has testified about the delusional mental state of a girl who's admitted to helping stab a classmate almost to death in a Wisconsin park in 2014.

"She will have an uphill road", McMahon said.

Geyser, who did the stabbing, will go on trial next month. The victim survived getting stabbed 19 times.

The Journal Sentinel reports Fisher testified Wednesday that Leutner told her Geyser had become obsessed with Slender Man and other scary characters on the Creepypasta website. Her legal team successfully argued that she truly thought she was serving as a proxy for a supernatural creature called the "Slender Man".

It was a tense day for Weier, knowing she would learn her fate.

Both Weier and Geyser were charged with being a party to attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

But she also pleaded not guilty due to mental illness of defect, setting up the trial on her mental status.
