Sinead O'Connor claims 'possessed' mother 'delighted' in sexually abusing her

Sinead - who has battled with her mental health for a number of years - reportedly asked Dr. Phil to be interviewed just a month after she shared an emotional video on Facebook where she hinted at having suicidal thoughts.

The musician, who has legally changed her name to Magda Davitt to be "free of parental curses", wrote a moving thank you to Dr. Phil on her Facebook page.

He told Entertainment Tonight that he feared that she was playing a risky game with her life."I've been a huge fan of Sinead O'Connor because she's one of the most pure voices in music and here I see this this iconic talent alone in the middle of the night, in a motel room in New Jersey", Dr. Phil recalled.

In the lead-up to the chat, McGraw appeared in a promo on Good Morning America, teasing viewers by saying, "This interview was raw, it was candid, it was cathartic for her".

In a preview for the episode, airing Tuesday, September 12, the "Nothing Compares to You'" singer alleged she suffered years of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her mother, Marie O' Connor. "She used to make me say over and over, "I am nothing". "She really has had a hard time, and she said, 'Look, I'm in trouble".

She opened up to Dr. Phil about a number of suicide attempts, which she believe were brought on by a hysterectomy operation. "I thought about it for a year before I did it".

"I think that what she's dealing with can be managed", the TV medic explained.

"I obviously want to be really careful cause I love my family and I don't blame them".

"What happened was I had been writing to my family, begging letters and angry letters", she said. "I was flung into surgical menopause and I became suicidal, I was a basket case", she says.

Sinead described her relationship as very mixed and it was clearly a love/hate situation. She won't wash - same for us; five years living with the same clothes, no washing.

"When we were children, my sister had the most glorious red hair", the singer recalled, "like that gorgeous woman on that show Mad Men (Christina Hendricks)".

The singer and outspoken activist also revealed that it was her mother's hatred for her sister's looks that inspired her to keep her hair short - a look she has maintained throughout most of her career. She would introduce us as her pretty daughter and her ugly daughter. And that's why I chopped my hair off. "I didn't want to be pretty".
