S&P 500 Futures Hit Record as Investors Shrug Off North Korea Threat

USA stocks are falling Thursday morning after finishing at record highs the last two days.

The technology sector jumped 0.35 percent, powered by an Nvidia-led surge in chipmakers and Apple's 1.33 percent increase, its first gains since the launch of the new iPhones. The S&P 500 index gained 4.61 points to 2,500.23, up 0.2%.

Shares of SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE DIA) traded up 0.26% during midday trading on Friday, hitting $222.45.

USA stocks have surged this year, despite turmoil in the White House, doubts about President Donald Trump's ability to push through his pro-business reforms, uncertainty over the timing of rate hikes, and lately, tensions over Pyongyang's missile tests.

Global markets were mostly defensive with the UK's FTSE-100 losing more than 1% in value after the Bank of England said that some withdrawal of stimulus is likely appropriate "in the coming months", and China's Shanghai lower after data indicated the world's second largest economy is beginning to slow. The institutional investor owned 7,668 shares of the company's stock after selling 933 shares during the period. The Nasdaq composite slumped 22 points, or 0.4 percent, to 6,437.

Gold fell 0.6 percent to $1,321.69 an ounce.West Texas Intermediaterose 0.1 percent to $49.93 a barrel.

Sebastian Vettel clouted the barriers with a bit more force to do some damage, as did Kevin Magnussen . Renault's Nico Hulkenberg qualified seventh, and was followed by McLaren's Fernando Alonso .

Boeing rose $3.77, or 1.5 percent, to $249 as the aerospace company continued to set record highs. Dental supply company Henry Schein gave up $3.25, or 1.9 percent, to $165.63 and drugmaker Gilead Sciences lost $1.40, or 1.7 percent, to $81.76. "Control retail sales (excludes sales at food services and drinking places, gasoline stations, building materials and auto stores) which factor directly into GDP fell 0.2% m/m in August, after a strong 0.6% gain in the prior month and are running just 1.3% (annualized) above the Q2 pace", the German bank added.

The Fed said Hurricane Harvey is estimated to have reduced the rate of change in total output by roughly three-quarters of a percentage point.

The Dow rose 34 points, or 0.2 percent, to 22,237. Losses were capped when weaker-than-expected USA retail sales renewed doubts the Federal Reserve will raise rates in December. Higher interest rates make borrowing more expensive and slow down economic growth.

The tech index has been the best performing sector this year, rising more than 25 percent, far outpacing the broader S&P's 11.5 percent growth.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index edged up 0.1% but South Korea's Kospi lost 0.4%. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.20 percent from 2.19 percent.
