Ravens donating $1 million to help Houston

As Hurricane Harvey continues to wreak havoc and leave Greater Houston under many feet of water, two Bay Area tech giants are pledging matching funds to encourage private citizens to donate to the disaster relief effort.

According to a report published by Cowen & Co. analyst Helane Becker on Tuesday, the financial toll from the hurricane on United could be more than $265 million.

The US Federal Aviation Administration has closed Houston Intercontinental, United's second largest hub, through at least noon on Thursday, 31 August. The airline's operations at the airport account for 17% of its total capacity.

When users in the USA log on to Facebook, they will be greeted with a message offering the chance to donate to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy's Hurricane Harvey Recovery Fund.

The exact financial impact was not yet known, but even minor storms can cost airlines millions of dollars. In addition, we expect school closures, and it is possible future vacations will be canceled to make up the lost classroom time.

Brown quit his post shortly after that over what was viewed as a mishandling of the federal response to Katrina. Harvey was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm by the NHC late on Saturday.

United hasn't issued guidance to investors about the storm's impact yet, according to the airline.

In April, video surfaced of a passenger named David Dao being forcibly removed from one of the United's planes in Chicago. This includes aiding Houston-based employees who are stuck elsewhere around United's network and flying unscheduled Boeing 777 relief flights to Houston Intercontinental with supplies to aid those impacted from the storm.

For its part, United sent three of its brand new Boeing 777-300ER jets to Houston over the weekend.

The governor's office also provided a link to other Texas organizations that are accepting donations.
