Participants, including journalist P Sainath, addressed the rally at the Central College grounds.

No arrests have been made so far by the police, who is still looking for those behind her murder.

The 55-year-old Left-leaning journalist, a fierce critic of Hindutva politics, was shot dead on the doorstep of her house while she was returning from her office on September 5. Many Naxals who came into the mainstream after giving up weapons did not send her hate mails or calls.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday slapped a legal notice on columnist Ramchandra Guha for allegedly linking the Sangh Parivar with the murder of scribe Gauri Lankesh, and asked him to apologise publicly for the same.

Gauri Lankesh was known for her left-leaning views.

The protest rally was organised by 21 civil society groups, which began at the city's railway station before the protesters protested on the streets.

Videos and photos from the rally show a sea of protesters carrying posters that read "I am Gauri" or "We are all Gauri".

Protestors sang protest songs and raised slogans such as "Gauri Lankesh Amar Rahe" (Long live Gauri Lankesh) and demanded that Lankesh's assailants be brought to book. Some also sported black bands as a mark of protest. Condemning the act of celebrating and justifying Lankesh's murder by a section of supporters from the Sangh Parivar, Sanatan Sanstha and the Sri Ram Sena, a statement issued at the meeting said, "We, at the resistance meeting, condemn this inhuman behaviour, which is not supported by any religious teaching".

Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashish Khetan, along with the members of the party's Karnataka unit, also participated in the protest.
