President Trump Travel Ban Expire This Sunday, What is Next

President Donald Trump ordered restrictions on travel to the US from eight countries, replacing his ban on travelers from six Muslim-majority nations.

The original version, signed as an executive order in January, blocked citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries - Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Yemen and Syria - as well as all refugees across the globe.

Three new nations were added to the list of countries whose citizens will face the restrictions: Chad, North Korea and Venezuela - although the restrictions on Venezuela target that country's leadership and family members.

An administration official, briefing reporters on a conference call, acknowledged that the number of North Koreans traveling to the United States now was very low.

The administration has argued the ban was necessary to give it time to complete a thorough review of screening procedures and information sharing to make sure that those who enter the country don't pose a safety risk.

Immigration attorney Leon Fresco said the court has a lot of options, ranging from hearing arguments on the current travel ban to only considering whatever new restrictions are introduced. The ban was set to expire Sunday. The restrictions could vary by country, officials said.

The so-called travel ban was always meant to be temporary, giving the Department of Homeland Security 90 days to gather information and report on screening for foreign travelers.

The Homeland Security Department has suggested country-by-country restrictions that might affect eight or nine countries where governments have not satisfied U.S. demands on counterterrorism efforts and passport standards, according to media reports.

Trump's ban of nationals from six Muslim majority countries has provoked a outcry from civil rights groups, and a series of lawsuits. Individuals from the relevant countries with a bona fide relationship to a person or entity in the United States will be issued visas.

A 90-day policy review of the travel ban ends on Sunday and the US Department of Homeland Security says it has identified more than six countries that were failing to comply with security standards aimed at blocking terrorists from coming to the US. While the case is pending, the Supreme Court narrowed the class of individuals exempt from the challenged sections of the executive order - the 90-day travel ban and 120-day suspension of the United States refugee program - to individuals with a "credible claim of a bona fide relationship" to a United States person or entity.

The solicitor general will formally notify the Supreme Court of the new proclamation this evening, as it will effect the litigation now before the justices.

The Supreme Court has scheduled arguments for October 10 on whether the measure, at its core, is legal.

But what the case will address, if it goes ahead, is unclear. Check back for updates.
