NWS: Biggest Hurricane Irma Local Impact Will Be Gusty Winds

Warnings of risky storm surges remained in effect through vast swaths of peninsular Florida, where more than six million people had been ordered to flee Irma in one of the biggest evacuations in USA history.

Earlier this morning around 8am Irma slammed through the Florida Keys as a category 4 hurricane with winds of 130mph.

Irma is plowing into Georgia and toward other parts of the Deep South - Alabama, Tennessee and the Carolinas. The restoration to some areas is expected to take weeks, he said.

However, we will still need to monitor Jose as the forecast track has Jose doing a loop over the open waters in the coming days before eventually maybe heading towards the East Coast of the United States by next weekend.

The Montgomery Public Schools officials are also watching the storm and how it might affect the district's school schedule, they said in a message to parents Friday evening. "This is when we are Tampa strong".

Six deaths in Florida have been blamed on Irma, which first hit the state Sunday as a powerful Category 4 hurricane.

He said boats were cast ashore, water, sewers and electricity were knocked out, and "I don't think I saw one trailer park where nearly everything wasn't overturned".

"Irma is expected to produce rain accumulations of 2 to 5 inches with isolated 8 inches through Wednesday across SC and northern portions of Georgia, Alabama, and MS into Tennessee and North Carolina", the center said in its latest advisory on Monday night, adding that it had discontinued all warnings of storm surges and tropical storms.

The NBA's Top Pick Has Been Traded
Others think that he’ll continue to use the picks himself and construct a young core that can emerge after the Cavaliers vs. Fultz is an ideal scoring guard to run alongside him, and can also take over point guard duties if the Simmons experiment fails.

FPL will begin restoring power in multiple locations and follow an overall plan that calls for restoring power to the largest number of customers safely and as quickly as possible. "We have to wait till all the elements pass through", he said.

FPL also warned residents to stay away from downed power lines.

Many people heard the news and started gathering their belongings so they could evacuate.

SC also geared up for the storm.

Alabama's Emergency Management Agency said wind gusts at 9 a.m. were 40 miles per hour in southern Alabamba and Gov. Kay Ivey issued a directive permitting state offices in certain counties to close Monday.

The storm made another landfall in Marcos Island, Florida.

The eye of Irma passed over Barbuda, a tiny Caribbean island of about 1,800 people, on Wednesday, destroying telecommunication systems and cell towers.

With the arrival of what is potentially one of the most devastating storms to ever hit Florida, officials have set aside 3.2 million liters of water, filled 67 trailers with meals, and amassed 24,000 tarps.
