More flights cancelled out of Auckland

At least 39 flights were cancelled in New Zealand on Tuesday after a jet fuel shortage hit the country's largest airport in Auckland, Reuters reported.

The pipeline between the Marsden Point refinery and petrol company-owned Wiri storage depot failed last Thursday, disrupting fuel supply to the country's biggest city and forcing airlines to ration flights in an effort to conserve fuel.

About 3000 passengers will be affected by cancellations on Wednesday, which include five Australian services, two Fiji services and a return service to Vietnam.

"With the pressure on aviation fuel supplies, it is prudent the public sector does what it can to help the airlines and the fuel suppliers meet the challenges of the situation", she said.

However Air New Zealand said it was planning further cuts to its service because it was still using too much fuel, despite cancelling four transtasman and 14 domestic flights.

Air NZ also began refuelling wide-body long-haul aircraft in Wellington today in addition to the refuelling stops long-haul flights have made in Australia and the Pacific.

The disruption in air services comes days before the national election scheduled to be held on Saturday.

Airways New Zealand, the Board of Airline Representatives New Zealand (BARNZ) and Auckland Airport have announced today the decision to temporarily increase the number of flights permitted to use the Green X23A SMART Approach flight path to the airport.

English said military trucks and a naval tanker had been assigned to transport fuel around the country and help ensure supplies for motorists were maintained.

Travellers have been advised to check with their airline for any disruptions.

"The fact that one digger can cause our global travel to be ground to a halt shows how vulnerable that infrastructure was and the National government ignored that", Labour leader Jacinda Ardern said on Monday.

"We remain on track to deliver jet fuel into Wiri between midday Sunday the 24th and midday Tuesday the 26th", he says. "One pipeline and one digger and New Zealand grinds to a halt".

The Government is also looking at the possibility of bringing fuel in by ship, to Wynyard Wharf, Ms Collins said.

She said Immigration New Zealand is advising worldwide visitors whose visas may expire that they will be granted an electronic visa free of charge.

Pipeline owners Refining New Zealand said the pipeline was struck by a digger or other machinery and should be repaired by next Tuesday.
