Madison Keys Makes It Four American Women In Quarter-Finals

Madison Keys has made her first United States tennis Open quarter final, upsetting fourth seed Elina Svitolina in their round of 16 match at Flushing Meadows.

The 20th seed secured her first US Open quarter-final berth courtesy of a 6-4 7-6 (7-2) victory against Safarova.

The 32-year-old, ranked 418 after injury problems, is the first qualifier since 1981 to reach the last eight and she faces Keys next.

There are now four Americans among the eight women in the US Open quarterfinals: Keys, No. 9 seed Venus Williams, No. 20 seed Coco Vandeweghe, and unseeded Sloane Stephens.

The Ukrainian led 4-2 in the deciding set but Keys used her extra power to telling effect to win the final four games.

No one has advanced to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows with such a low ranking, although five women - including 2009 champion Kim Clijsters - did so while unranked.

An erratic match saw five breaks of serve in both sets, but it was Kanepi who held her serve to reach the quarters in NY for a second time. This is Kanepi's sixth trip to a Grand Slam quarterfinal and her first since Wimbledon in 2013.

Keys bounced back after getting routed in the second set.

After taking the third set, he then trailed 5-2 in the fourth and had to save two match points.

Venus Williams, seeded ninth, will be playing in the US Open quarterfinals for the 12th time in her career after beating Carla Suárez Navarro 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

"It's definitely more than just a win", Keys said.

Karolina Pliskova powered her way into the U.S. Open women's quarterfinals, overwhelming American Jennifer Brady 6-1, 6-0 in just 47 minutes. She fell behind 4-2 before winning four straight games to claim victory in the match.

Rublev next faces top-seeded Rafael Nadal, who beat Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 earlier Monday.

The 37-year-old, who has shone in the majors this year - reaching the Australian Open and Wimbledon finals - faces two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova on Tuesday.

"I really wanted to make the best of the chance I got from the last match, being down match point, so today was much better", Pliskova said after the match.
