Barger's motion hopes to prevent a larger outbreak, similar to what has occurred in San Diego County and Santa Cruz County.

Public Health officials said they have been proactively preparing for an outbreak for some time. Anyone who was exposed to the virus but is not covered by a medical insurance plan, and wants to be evaluated for hepatitis A vaccination may go to any County public health center, where vaccinations will be given at no cost. Reports state that more than 200 people got themselves vaccinated this weekend as restaurants in the region reinforced their health safety measures. At-risk populations include homeless individuals, intravenous drug users, food handlers, janitorial workers and occupations/professions that have regular interactions with at-risk people, such as police officers, firefighters, paramedics, homeless service providers and health care professionals.

"Going forward, we are doing everything we can do and working with all of our partners, and I can't predict how long this will last".

Hepatitis A is typically spread when people eat contaminated food or water; more rarely, the virus is transmitted person-to-person through the "fecal-oral route", she explained.

A person can get Hepatitis A, a viral liver infection, by coming into close contact with an infected person's feces through contaminated food or objects.

"Basically, if an individual is infected with hepatitis A and they use the bathroom and don't wash their hands, and then they can spread or contaminate the environment: door handles, ATMs or whatever they touch", Wooten said.

"We are in the situation of a hepatitis A outbreak ... as of this morning", Public Health Department Director Barbara Ferrer told the Board of Supervisors.

They stressed the importance of getting vaccinated, but noted it is not necessary for everyone.

"To date, no common source of food, beverage, or other cause has been identified; as a result, the source of the outbreak remains undetermined", the website says.

The city has begun power-washing those areas with a bleach solution, and the county has set up 40 hand-washing stations around the city over the past week, officials said. "At the time, the city hadn't added any public restrooms other than Portland Loos in more than a decade". The county sent a directive at the end of August to demand the city to wash its streets and expand access to public restrooms. The operating hours of 14 restrooms in Balboa Park were also recently expanded to 24 hours a day. Here is a complete list of locations.
