Juggalos set to march on Washington, DC on Saturday

Tattooed, pierced and wearing clown makeup, hundreds of fans of the rap-metal group Insane Clown Posse gathered at the storied location to protest the FBI's labeling the fan base a gang in 2011.

The band's followers, called Juggalos, rallied in front of the Lincoln Memorial in a show of strength and unity.

Assembling near the Lincoln Memorial, the "Juggalos", as they are known, spoke of the difficulties they have faced since the law enforcement agency's decision: Losing jobs, custody of their children, and excessive police attention.

"We support music that has changed some of our lives", she said.

March organizers also planned face painting activities and sold merchandise printed with the Insane Clown Posse logo of a man running and carrying a hatchet. She said she had been profiled by police in OH because of the gang designation.

Plaintiff Scott Gandy was forced to alter his Juggalo tattoo to look like a fish in order to apply to join the Army, his lawyer Saura Sahu said during a 2014 hearing.

On Saturday, downtown Washington, D.C., was home to three prominent demonstrations that some feared might combine violently but instead stayed largely separate and peaceful, with modest attendance.

Todd Okan, 35, said he was pulled over by police in Sacramento, California, because he had stickers of Insane Clown Posse's "hatchet man" mascot on his auto. "What happens to Justin b-- boy Bieber's Beliebers?"

Insane Clown Posse, Juggalos to march on Washington to fight gang distinction

The Detroit-based hip-hop duo are showing strength in numbers to protest the FBI's 2011 classification of their fans as a "loosely organized hybrid gang", and hope that their collective stance will make an impact on the public's perception of their Juggalo subculture and fandom.

The report said "most crimes committed by Juggalos are sporadic, disorganized, individualistic, and often involve simple assault, personal drug use and possession, petty theft and vandalism".

The band sued the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation over the gang classification in January 2014, saying it had adversely affected Juggalos. "One is a group of people who worship an insane clown, the other is a group of Juggalos".

The crowd for Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony, held on the mall in January, was famously less than that for his predecessor - despite the president's insistence otherwise - and the attendance at this rally was also smaller than expected. Their website said they'll "demand protection for traditional American culture".

Like Trump supporters, many come from lower-income families - but being a follower of the group gives them a sense of belonging and objective.

Afterward, the Black Lives Matters protesters left the stage peacefully, without any violence resulting from what wound up being a peaceful day overall.

Around the same time and several blocks away, near the White House, was the Protect American Democracy rally, which organizers say was meant to tell the president to take a tougher stance against Russian interference in American elections.
