Israeli and Egyptian Leaders Meet Publicly For First Time

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi were photographed smiling and shaking hands in a meeting at the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, but the whole world was not smiling with them. Earlier, el-Sisi met with Mahmoud Abbas and discussed the peace process as well as the reconciliation between the Palestinian factions. This was the first public meeting of the two leaders since el-Sisi began his term in office.

Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi stated that human rights concepts shouldn't be reduced to only political rights, but rather should be dealt with from a comprehensive perspective that includes social and economic rights. In a briefing to reporters, Netanyahu declined to address the meeting despite the fact that it was officially publicized.

On Monday evening, Netanyahu met with US President Donald Trump for the first time since his visit to Israel in May. He told them that he believes the best way to advance the peace process was through a regional approach involving the Arab states.

Reportedly, two participants said that Sisi expressed his optimism concerning the American administration efforts in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and added that Egypt is willing to in provide support in the matter.

Following the attack, Amaq, the news agency of the Islamic State militant group, claimed responsibility for the bombing. The 18-year-old was detained Saturday at the southeast England port of Dover, a departure point for ferries to France.

It was not long after Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed the Camp David Treaty with Israel that he was assassinated by Islamic terrorists.

El-Sisi also met with PA President Mahmoud Abbas in NY.

Furthermore, he said, the two leaders "likely also covered recent developments regarding Hamas, which is increasingly in Egypt's orbit, rather than Qatar's".
