Iranian leader slams Myanmar over Rohingya Muslims issue

When asked whether or not his government would take back Canada's special recognition of Suu Kyi on Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau skirted the question by calling the humanitarian situation "terrible" and "extremely preoccupying".

The Myanmar government, led by Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, has rejected the accusations of atrocities against the Rohingya community, who are denied citizenship despite living in the Buddhist majority country for generations.

In her first address to the General Assembly as national leader in September previous year, the former opposition icon defended her government's efforts to resolve the crisis over the treatment of the Rohingya.

"We will always remain the open and compassionate country we are. It is our duty and we try our best", she said. Suu Kyi has a lot of work to do to help pave a way forward toward peace, prosperity, and inclusion in her country.

I visited Myanmar in 2014 and interviewed many Rohingya in the miserable, water-logged camps of Rakhine where thousands of displaced Rohingya struggle to survive.

On September 9 this year he co-introduced a bipartisan resolution in senate on the atrocity on the Rohingya and urged Suu Kyi to "live up to her inspiring words upon receiving the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize with respect to ethnic reconciliation in Burma and in particular to address the historic and brutal repression of the Rohingya in Rakhine state".

Why has India not taken a stronger stand on the violence against the Rohingyas in Myanmar?

Conservative MP Garnett Genuis called the federal government's response to the persecution "slow and inadequate" despite it being repeatedly raised in the House.

On Sunday, in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar, mostly women and child Rohingyas were in the queue for handouts of food and clothes.

Could Aung San Suu Kyi stop the violence?

In one exchange in the House before summer break, Liberal MP Omar Alghabra touted the government's record of commenting on Myanmar's ongoing crisis where and when necessary.

Real Madrid have been most heavily linked to the 21-year-old while a number of Premier League clubs also monitor his progress. But as I said: "I like it in Leipzig very well". "That is why I do not think what is ahead in one, two or three years".

Since the 1970s Rohingya have been have been targeted in a cycle of violence by Buddhists and Myanmar security forces, prompting the United Nations to describe them as among the world's most persecuted people.

Aung San Suu Kyi makes most of the important decisions in her party and cabinet.

An online petition by Change.org has nearly 390,000 signatures calling for Suu Kyi to be stripped of her Peace Prize.

Gatineau-based government relations and communications consultant Fareed Khan launched the petition on Monday.

In an earlier statement made to news agency Reuters, Htay said he was unsure precisely why Suu Kyi was not attending, but stressed that "she's never afraid of facing criticism or confronting problems", adding that "perhaps she's got more pressing matters here to deal with".

"This is what I would like to say and the government should be careful".

He said the crisis in Myanmar is a political issue and should not be reduced to a religious conflict between Muslims and Buddhists.

Ms Suu Kyi had been expected to participate in discussions at the General Assembly session in NY, which runs from 19 to 25 September.

"The violence must end now".

United Nations human rights chief Zeid Raad Al-Hussein had criticised any move by India to deport Rohingyas to Myanmar when the community was facing violence in their country after Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju had announced that they would be deported. Freeland's office did not respond before press time.

However, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has resolutely ruled out any such move, emphasizing that Peace Prizes can not be withdrawn due to the fact that only the work which led to the awarding of the prize is being taken into account. Suu Kyi is one of six global figures to receive that honour. Raoul Wallenberg, Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, the Aga Khan, and Malala Yousafzai are among its list of recipients.
