The video, shot while risky winds and heavy rain fell, shows a store window shattered and a group of hooded individuals entering and leaving the store with what appears to be shoe boxes.

Police in South Florida have arrested almost a dozen people accused of looting stores as Hurricane Irma made landfall in the Keys Sunday morning.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department announced on Twitter that it had caught the perpetrators. Next, they looted a Foot Locker store and CashAmerica Pawn Store nearby, according to WPLG-TV. Ryan Cook and Max Saintvil, both 28, face six counts each of burglary, said Casey Liening, a spokeswoman for Fort Lauderdale police.

With millions of people under evacuation advisories, thieves are taking advantage of the homes emptied during Hurricane Irma.

Around five million people have been left without power and residents are battling winds of up to 130mph.

At least four people have been reported dead in Florida after the hurricane hit Florida Keys, with more than 25 people killed as the storm made its way through the Caribbean.

The crimes happened even before the height of the storm swept into South Florida Sunday, authorities said. Hurricane Irma has been closing in on Florida the past few days.

In downtown Miami, two of the two dozen construction cranes looming over the skyline collapsed in the wind. The unsafe storm surge "will rush in and could kill you".

Florida Power & Light reported the numbers Sunday afternoon.

Tornado warnings had been issued for various parts of Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties as a large thunderstorm went up the coast.
