Google Buying Part Of HTC's Smartphone Business For US$1.1B

It seems like the rumours are somewhat true as they have confirmed that they will be acquiring part of HTC's mobile division team for $1.1 billion.

As the transaction is "subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions", HTC says its deal with Google won't come into effect until early next year.

Google and HTC have signed a $1.1 billion agreement that will net Google a portion of HTC's smartphone research and development team and a separate non-exclusive intellectual property licence.

HTC will continue to operate its smartphone business separately, which according to the company has a team of engineers now working on their next flagship phone to follow the HTC U11, which we recently reviewed and praised.

HTC will continue to developing the next flagship smartphone, following the launch of the HTC U11 earlier this year.

The deal is a non-exclusive licensing agreement to some of HTC's intellectual property.

"Our unmatched smartphone value chain, including our IP portfolio, and world-class talent and system integration capabilities, have supported Google in bolstering the Android market", Cher Wang, Chairwoman and CEO of HTC said.

HTC is rumored to be working on Google's upcoming second-generation Pixel smartphone.

For Google, the deal substantially furthers its efforts in the smartphone space and extends its overall investment in its emerging hardware business.

With this new agreement, Google will now have direct access to the hardware technology and manpower of the Taiwanese company to build their own devices. There's also rumours that HTC is manufacturing the smaller version of the Pixel 2, with the XL version being made by LG. HTC will help Google to offer more powerful hardware to for the future smartphones in the coming days. This teamwork also gave birth to the "Nexus One in 2010, the Nexus 9 tablet in 2014, and the first Pixel smartphone just a year ago".

The deal looks to be mainly focused around the Pixel smartphone as most of the HTC employees are already at Google to work on its new range of Pixel devices. In 2011, it had announced a $12.5 billion buyout of Motorola Mobility.
