First 'Tomb Raider' trailer reveals Alicia Vikander's Lara Croft

This film will focus on Croft's origin story with the character far from the seasoned adventurer gamers now know her as.

The film also stars Dominic West (The Wire) as Lara's father, Walton Goggins (Sons of Anarchy) as the villain, and Daniel Wu (Warcraft) as a ship captain who works with Lara on her adventure. The film stars Oscar victor Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) in the lead role, under the direction of Roar Uthaug (The Wave), with Oscar victor Graham King (The Departed) producing under his GK Films banner.

It looks less campy than the Angelina Jolie original, and seems to share many plot elements with the 2013 game - a young Lara's stranded on an island while seeking adventure, encounters some clearly bad guys, and has to kill them all.

This takes her to a mysterious island off the coast of Japan, which is home to a legendary tomb, the last place her father was seen alive. Judging from the scenes in the trailer, the movie is jam-packed with fight scenes, deadly traps, and plenty of tomb raiding.

"She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits", Vikander tells EW, "but we've stripped away all of her experience". But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous.
