Ernest Hemingway's cats are safe after Irma

People from all over the world travel to visit the Key West home where Ernest Hemingway wrote a number of his best-known works, including the novel "To Have and Have Not" and the short-story classics "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber".

The museum's staff made headlines after announcing that they wouldn't heed orders to evacuate the Keys, thought to be particularly vulnerable to Irma's wind and rain.

"The cats are also accustomed to our voices and our care", he said. "We all hung out together", Gonzales said. "They're smarter than human beings", he added. We love them. They love us.

Ten employees of the house museum stayed on site with the cats, and the 18-inch-thick limestone walls of the structure provided adequate protection from the category-four storm.

Flight cancellations number in the thousands as Irma takes aim at Atlanta
Because of Tropical Storm Irma's high winds - Delta has cancelled 900 flights today including many at their hub in Atlanta. Staff are expected to determine if passenger flights can resume Tuesday after a damage assessment is conducted.

Outside the grounds of the 19th-century building, which sits 16 feet above sea-level - making it a high point on the island - Irma's effects remain to be tallied. Even though Mariel Hemingway, an Oscar-nominated actress who is one of the late writer's granddaughters, begged the 72-year old employee to get out of Dodge, Sands stayed put. But the Miami Herald reported that the damage to Key West, a tourist destination and end-of-the-road hideaway, appeared to be less severe than feared.

"Get in the auto with the cats and take off", Ms Hemingway had begged.

Hemingway's cats, as they are known, lounge in calmer times around the museum's lush gardens or snooze on the indoor furniture as visitors stroll by.

The cats at the museum all carry the polydactyl gene in their DNA to have the unique six-toe feature, but only about half of them carry the physical trait, according to the museum's website.
