Earthquake Detected In North Korea Amid Fears Of New Nuclear Test

Japan's Kyodo News earlier reported, however, that a 3.4 magnitude natural disaster was detected at a depth of zero kilometers near the North's nuclear test site, citing China's quake agency.

The site is near where North Korea on September 3 conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in what it said was the detonation of a thermonuclear weapon.

The early September detonation followed two intercontinental ballistic missile launches in July that brought Kim Jong-un's isolated regime a step closer to achieving its aim of being able to deploy a nuclear warhead over the continental US.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to take the "highest-level" action in response to President Trump's threat to "totally destroy" the North over its nuclear and missile programs. He said in remarks broadcast on South Korean TV that the countermeasures flagged by Kim might refer to a "strongest-ever" ground-level test of a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific.

The move escalated tensions with the USA and its neighbours, and this week the regime's foreign minister said the country's options included testing a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean.

North Korea has been struck by a 3.4 scale quake that China says may have been caused by an explosion.

The Pentagon said the B-1B Lancer bombers came from Guam and the U.S. Air Force F-15C Eagle fighter escorts came from Okinawa, Japan.

The quake was detected in Kilju county in North Hamgyong Province, where North Korea's known Punggyeri nuclear site is located, according to South Korea's meteorological agency.

But the official from the South Korean agency said the analysis of seismic waves and the lack of sound waves clearly showed that the quake was not caused by an artificial explosion.

Kim and Trump, missiles and sanctions, Russian Federation and China - here's why North Korea matters so much to the global jigsaw puzzle.

China's Earthquake Administration said the magnitude 3.4 quake was not a nuclear explosion and had the characteristics of a natural tremor.

After a week in which through tweets and a speech before the United Nations General Assembly, Trump introduced the derogatory nickname "Rocket Man" for Kim into global news coverage and left open his prerogative to "totally destroy" North Korea, the president gave no ground on Friday in his public standoff with his adversary's leader.

There was no immediate reaction from China's Foreign Ministry, but the news was widely reported by Chinese state media outlets and on social media.

The administration said in a statement on its website that the quake, which occurred on Saturday afternoon local time, was recorded at a depth of zero kilometres.

An import ban on clothing produced in North Korea is also planned.
