Congolese Security Forces Kill at Least 18 Burundian Refugees

Local activists accused the police and soldiers of opening fire as the refugees protested over the plan in the town of Kamanyola in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday.

Boji said the clashes began after a group of refugees overran a jail run by the country's domestic intelligence agency to demand the release of four Burundians who had been arrested for expulsion on Wednesday night.

The clashes broke out when refugees were opposed to repatriation to Burundi, Kasereka said.

Eyewitness Alfred Rukungo said the soldiers continued shooting into the crowd even after some refugees were wounded.

Maman Sidikou, the head of MONUSCO, the UN's peacekeeping mission in the country, said in a statement Saturday that at least 36 refugees had been reported killed.

Bertin Bisimwa, chief of Kamanyola, says more than 100 people were injured in the incident.

Kamanyola is home to 2,000 of the almost 44,000 people who have fled Burundi to neighboring Congo, according to the U.N. Refugee Agency.

The news release also noted that UNHCR and its partners have sent teams to Kamanyola, including medical staff, to treat the injured.

More than 400,000 people have left Burundi since April 2015, when violent protests erupted after President Pierre Nkurunziza sought a third term in office.

Overall, the violence in Burundi has claimed between 500 and 2,000 lives, according to differing tolls provided by the United Nations or NGOs and more than 400,000 Burundians have fled overseas.
