Confederate monument rally in Richmond has police on alert

Richmond city officials said they were considering removing the statue following the violent white nationalist rally last month in Charlottesville.

"We're here to stand up with Virginia residents who requested our assistance here", said Tara Brandau, a CSA II: The New Confederate States of America leader from Florida.

ABC-affiliate WRIC said after about an hour of interactions between the two groups, police escorted the dozen Confederate monument supporters out of the area.

There is no such vote on the table in Richmond, which served as the Capital of the Confederacy.

Richmond officials are preparing for possible protests on Monument Avenue Saturday.

Police say people can exercise their free speech within certain assembly points around Lee Monument.

Authorities closed down streets and blocked them off with dump trucks to prevent a repeat of Charlottesville, when a suspect rammed a auto into a crowd of counter-protesters and killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer. She told the out-of-state neo-confederates to leave Richmond.

"You're causing trouble in our city", Lawrence yelled at the group. After the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer in the Charlottesville event, Gov. Terry McAuliffe issued a moratorium on permit rallies around the controversial public monuments. "Have you no sensibility?"

Rally organizers say they're cooperating with police and that they want the protest to remain peaceful. Anyone who rallies within the grass space of the monument will be arrested by police.

The rally will be met with a counter-protest from the North Alabama Democratic Socialists of America and the Tennessee Valley Progressive Alliance.

"My suggestion, and don't take this the wrong way, don't show up", Durham answered. In a tweet posted Saturday, Richmond police said the move to end the rally early was "a mutually agreed-upon decision" made by both police and rally organizers. Protesters who tried to hide their identities with masks would be arrested, no questions asked.

Chief Durham says it's not about taking sides but keeping those who rally and residents safe. "That's the struggle here".

Durham helped Richmonders that parts to remember Monument Avenue and some encompassing lanes would have diverse activity and stopping designs.
