'Battle of the Sexes' cast knows the equality fight rages on

Filmed during the presidential election, Silverman imagined the United States would have its first female president by the time the movie was released.

- Bobby Riggs' next big spectacle may be a leap off Suicide Bridge in Pasadena, California, while Billie Jean King is just happy to have made a spectacle of the 55-year-old hustler and to have won $200,000 to boot. Their new movie is nonfiction, and imagine the position they were in.

You can catch Emma in Battle of the Sexes when it hits theatres tomorrow (Sept. 22)!

In 1973, at the height of the women's liberation movement, former tennis great Bobby Riggs went up against current world number one women's tennis pro Billie Jean King, in a match that would go down as a landmark moment in the quest for equal rights for women in the US. "Battle Of The Sexes" is about the showdown between a brash, attention-loving guy who doesn't care all that much whether he wins - it's all good for business - and an earnest feminist opponent weighed down by her sense that she's fighting for a righteous cause. And its effects are still sparking debates in bedrooms and boardrooms 44 years later.

"It's sad that it's still relevant", Carell tells CNN. You could certainly argue that, contrary to this movie's uplifting, forward-looking messaging, a disparity remains.

"Your dreams sort of rise with you. It's pretty heart wrenching that it's still a discussion". And while King's contribution to advancing opportunities for women and girls is incalculable - she founded the Women's Sports Foundation in 1974 in part to protect Title IX, the federal law passed in 1972 to ban gender-based discrimination in education - she's always kept her eye on the ball of ensuring equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, and so on.

"Ever since the day I was 11 years old and wasn't allowed in a photo because I didn't have a tennis skirt on, I knew then that I wanted to change the sport", the 29-year-old Mrs. King said. "Progress can be slow, but it's so, so important to keep going, to not lose hope and to know that eventually, it'll all going to balance out". Directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton instead focus more on King's off-court life, as she grapples with her closeted sexuality after sparking with her hairdresser, Marilyn Burnett (Andrea Riseborough).

She added she thinks the guidelines denied students accused of sexual assault their due process rights. The department announced it has issued "new interim guidance on campus sexual misconduct".

With over 30,000 people traveling to the Astrodome to watch the match in person, the Battle of the Sexes is still the most well-attended tennis event in American history.

Carell grew up in what he calls a "equitable household".

"As I got older I started to understand the responsibilities that I had as a female athlete because of things that Billie had done", Lieberman said. "It was a big joke".

"Steve worked for probably six months and all those scenes with him... he really sold it", she said.

King ended up besting Riggs in all three sets (6-4, 6-3, 6-3).

In a film that fights so hard for equality and women's rights, a strong male character, Larry King, had to play a supporting role, even though he did more than just stand idly by when the WTA was forming. I think I just had this, you know, kind of hanging over me. "On the tour during the late '70s, this woman who just saw the movie, who was the highest one in Philip Morris at the time because of Virginia Slims, told me, 'You can't say anything [about being gay] or you have no tour, '" King says. "I'd say 99% of it they got right", she said. "Well, not seconds, but 10 years, 20 years". And when Marilyn realizes that even she will never trump tennis in Billie Jean's heart, her leaving is a restrained and quiet moment. And freedom and things go forward and then they go backward, they go forwards and they go backwards.

"It was a really interesting time, so this event took on extra weight", said Dayton.
