Two troopers dead after Virginia State Police helicopter crashes near Charlottesville

Virginia Governor, Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, declared an emergency and halted a white nationalist rally, while President Donald Trump condemned the violence. "We have so many great things going on in our country, when I watch Charlottesville, to me it's very, very sad". They gathered in Richmond, Virginia to protest at the proposed removal of monuments harking back to the Confederacy - a group which opposed the abolition of slavery and sparked the United States civil war.

The FBI said it has opened a civil rights investigation into the circumstances that led a driver to plow a vehicle into a crowd while white nationalist activists and counter-protesters clashed in Charlottesville on Saturday (Aug 12).

Though it is not yet clear if Fields had any connections to the white supremacists taking part in the rally, witnesses said it appeared the 20-year-old intentionally drove through the crowd that was protesting the rally.

Tonight's rallies like this one are condemning the white nationalist rally that began this morning in Virginia and the death of a counter protestor after witnesses say a auto drove into the group. You have made our commonwealth stronger.

"There can be no doubt that the appalling display of white supremacy and hatred on display in Charlottesville today was the precipitator of the violence", said National Nurse Union executive director RoseAnn DeMoro.

European markets end lower amid geopolitical tensions
The broad-based S&P 500 shed 0.6 percent to 2,459.50, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index tumbled 0.8 percent to 6,299.12. Penney slumped as much as 18.25 percent to a record low after the retailer reported a bigger-than-expected quarterly loss.

Given that Trump is generally held in high regard by the kind of people who attended the rally in Charlottesville - from David Duke to more run-of-the-mill Nazis - the president's resistance to disparaging white nationalism looks very convenient. One person was killed and at least two dozen were hurt.

When asked to clarify what the president meant by "many sides", a White House official said Trump "was condemning hatred, bigotry and violence from all sources and all sides".

"We are in a very unsafe place right now", he said.

Groups of white nationalists descended on Charlottesville to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee, and were met by counter-protesters, leading to violence that began Friday night and continued into Saturday. He simply told them to "go home". "Shame on you. You are anything but a patriot".

But some of the white nationalists cited Trump's victory as validation for their beliefs, and Trump's critics pointed to the president's racially tinged rhetoric as exploiting the nation's festering racial tension. Not Donald Trump. Not Barack Obama.
