Stocks drift lower on Wall Street

The stock was the biggest gainer in the S&P 500, adding $8.02 to $45.25.

The Nasdaq, Wall Street's home to many high profile tech companies, finished the day down more than 2%.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 7 points, or 0.3%, to 2,445 as of 7:19 a.m.

Sterling was relatively flat against the dollar at 1.3002 after earlier wavering, but gained 0.14% on the euro to 1.1072, with the single currency down by a similar degree against the greenback, which in turn was down 0.38% against the yen.

Wall Street stocks fell for the second straight session Wednesday as worries about US-North Korea tensions rattled investors. In a tweet, President Donald Trump warned of military action "should North Korea act unwisely", noting that the U.S.is "locked and loaded".

Most of the reaction is to President Trump's warning on late Wednesday and North Korea's comment about exploring the idea of hitting USA territory Guam with a missile strike.

Still, there were fewer signs of anxiousness in the markets Friday.

Oanda analyst Craig Erlam said: "Risk aversion is once again the name of the game.as geopolitical tensions mount and investors head for cover in the traditional safe havens". It's still the highest it's been since May. Inflation has risen 1.7% over the past 12 months, suggesting that inflation pressures remain well under control.

The Federal Reserve has promised to raise interest rates at just a gradual pace to avoid disrupting the recovery or the markets. But some economists say the Fed may stand pat for the rest of 2017 unless inflation accelerates in coming months.

Data storage company Seagate Technology (STX) is posting a standout gain within the hardware sector, climbing by 2.1%.

Consumer-focused companies and banks were among the biggest decliners. The boost today continues the rental auto stock's pattern of big post-earnings moves, and has the shares testing their 180-day moving average, a level the stock has not surpassed since September 2016.

The September crude contract was up 20 cents to US$49.76 per barrel and the September natural gas contract was up seven cents to US$2.95 per mmBTU.

Nvidia Corp.(NVDA) shares fell 5.3%, even after the chip maker posted upbeat earnings late Thursday. Heating oil fell 1 cent to $1.63 a gallon.

Major indexes in Europe were mixed.

Nasdaq 100 e-minis were down 17 points, or 0.29 percent, on volume of 36,232 contracts.

Japanese markets were closed for a holiday but the tense mood dragged Asian shares lower and an MSCI index of stocks across the globe was on track to post its largest weekly drop since the week before Donald Trump won the US presidential election in November. Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.6 percent. Japan was closed on a public holiday.
