State Department Press Briefing on North Korea

He made it clear that while the State Department is pursuing "diplomatic means" with Pyongyang, "North Korea will be grossly overmatched by the US and its allies" and would lose any arms race it starts.

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis said that his responsibility is to have military options should they be needed. "It doesn't need another characterization beyond the fact that it would be catastrophic".

Mattis's comments today also echo a statement the Secretary of Defense made in May, in which he told a Pentagon press conference that war with North Korea "tragic on an unbelievable scale".

Earlier, President Donald Trump said North Korea should be "very, very nervous" if it acted against the US.

It is the second time this week that a key member of the USA administration has tried to calm the waters after bellicose comments from the president.

"I don't tell the enemy in advance what we are going to do", he said, adding that in the event of an attack, "We are ready".

The President's comments on Tuesday have been the backdrop to a week of growing tensions on the Korean peninsula.

It says North Korea will complete a plan by mid-August for the "historic enveloping fire at Guam", convey it to the commander in chief of its nuclear force and then "wait for his order".

South Korean and US troops are also gearing up for an annual joint drill from August 21, called the Ulchi Freedom Guardian, in which up to 30,000 USA troops will take part.

The South Korean government has maintained that it is open to dialogue with the North, and that a diplomatic solution to the DPRK issue could be achieved.

The United Nations says Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is "troubled" by the escalating rhetoric from all sides in the North Korea nuclear dispute.

REX TILLERSON: I think what the president's doing is trying to support our efforts by ensuring North Korea understands what the stakes are.

Tillerson's more moderate line, however, was seemingly dismissed by Deputy Assistant to the President Sebastian Gorka in an interview with BBC on Thursday.

"While our State Department is making every effort to resolve this global threat through diplomatic means, it must be noted that the combined allied militaries now possess the most precise, rehearsed and robust defensive and offensive capabilities on Earth", he said in a statement.
