Shopian encounter ends as slain militants identified, intense clashes erupt

In the massive encounter underway in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir since last night, a terrorist has been neutralised on Sunday as security forces have been giving a strong response.

Earlier, acting on specific information, the security forces surrounded Awneera village on Saturday evening upon which they were fired at by the militants, leading to the gunfight, a police spokesman said. "We lost two officers and three army personnel were injured".

Security forces had laid a cordon in the area following a tip-off to the local police.

Three militants were also killed in the encounter.

Mehmood Ghaznavi, a resident of Chadoora in Budgam of Central Kashmir, was operational commander of Hizbul Mujahideen in Kashmir.

The two other Hizb militants killed in the clash have been identified as Irfan-ul-Haq and Umar Majeed Mir.

Many civilians were injured when troops resorted to pellet firing on the protesters.

Internet services have been blocked in Badgam district following the identification of Itoo among the slain militants.
