Service Resumes After NJ Transit Train Derails in Penn Station

An NJ Transit train with no passengers on board derailed at New York Penn Station early Wednesday, officials said.

The train was being moved out of the train yard at Penn by Amtrak crews when the engine derailed around 4:30 a.m., CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported. No one was injured and crews were able to re-rail the train just after 6 a.m.

The derailment occurred on Track 4 at Penn, where fix work that started earlier this summer is still underway. The speedup was prompted by two derailments in the station during the spring that wreaked havoc on rail service between Boston and Washington, D.C.

No one was hurt during a derailment at Penn Station on July 6.

NJ Transit's website states that all affected lines are now running on or close to schedule following the derailment. The train cars were blocking tracks 1 through 5, which are not the ones already subject to closure for Amtrak's summer-long infrastructure overhaul.
