Robert E. Lee statue at Duke Chapel vandalized

Robert E. Lee statue at Duke Chapel vandalized

The damage to the face of the statue was discovered early Thursday.

The incident happened sometime overnight, Duke University spokesman Keith Lawrence said, adding that the campus police are investigating.

A fresh debate over Confederate symbols has roiled the USA since Saturday's violence during a protest by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, against the removal of a Lee statue in which one woman died.

"Hundreds marched on Friday through downtown Durham in a largely peaceful demonstration against racism, leading to an impromptu rally at the site where the bronze statue was toppled". A Duke Divinity School alumnus, Ocracoke United Methodist Church paster Richard Bryant, argues that campus officials should begin making plans to remove or disavow it.

On Thursday, Duke President Vince Price said people should respect the university's process for dealing with the issue. "Together - and only together - we will determine an appropriate course of action informed by our collective values".

N'KOREA NUCLEAR THREAT: US, Japan step up defence cooperation
But if North Korea succeeds in building nuclear missiles that can reach the continental USA , the equation changes. In Seoul on Thursday , South Korean President Moon Jae-in said he had received assurances from visiting Gen.

"Duke Chapel is a place of sanctuary and refuge that belongs to every member of the Duke community", Duke President Vincent E. Price said in a statement.

The Robert E. Lee statue, one of 10 outside Duke Chapel, was vandalized and defaced late on Wednesday night.

Other monuments around North Carolina also have been vandalized since the Charlottesville protest, and calls are growing to take down a Confederate soldier statue from the campus of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

The university, located in Durham, N.C., said it removed the limestone depiction of Lee from Duke Chapel amid a national debate about monuments to the Confederacy. Duke is a private university and outside the scope of that law.
