PDP convention: We can not afford another mistake -Mark

Makarfi disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the 75th PDP National Executive Committee meeting of the party held at the party national Secretariat on Friday in Abuja.

Nigeria's major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is set to hold its non-elective convention at Eagles Square Abuja.

He recalled that in the party at that time, internal democracy took a backstage, aggrieved party members were disregarded and impunity became the order of the day at various leadership levels in the party.

The question is, as we race to 2019 and Nigeria's defining election, will the electorate come out en masse to vote someone out or in?

"Many of our members that left earlier due to one form of disagreement or the other will return because the National Caretaker Committee has constituted reconciliation and contact as well as mobilisation committees to reach out to the defectors."From the way things are going presently in this country, I believe Nigerians will realise that the PDP is the only alternative that could salvage the country", Okowa added".

He said that the loss of presidential election and the gale of defections were enough to sink the party's ship, but expressed delight that the party had overcome the challenges.

"Yesterday, we had a prolong meeting with the leaders from the zone to resolve the issues and no matter what you are doing as a political party, you must lose some members and also gain others".

He stated: "We will continue to pray for the president". It had the former Senate President, Senator David Mark, GCON, former Senate President and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen.

Mark, therefore, charged the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led Special Convention Committee not to leave any stone unturned to guarantee a hitch-free exercise.

Kashamu was said to be the one who helped Modu-Sheriff procure court judgements that stalled the last two convention of the party in May and August 2016, as well as some of the contradictory judgements by trial courts during the PDP imbroglio.

"We are rebounding back, realising that there is a champion in each of us in the party".

In a statement issued yesterday, Mark again dismissed speculations that he would decamp from the party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

"We have come this far through a tortuous journey".
