Investors seek safe bets as Wall Street closes lower

North Korea said it is considering plans for a missile strike on the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam earlier on Wednesday, just hours after President Donald Trump told the North that any threat to the United States would be met with "fire and fury".

The Swiss franc was on pace for its biggest single-day rise against the euro since the Swiss National Bank removed its cap on the currency in January 2015. Rival TripAdvisor also slumped after its latest quarterly report showed that online and transaction revenue growth fell sharply.

Travel website operator Priceline fell 7.26 percent, weighing the most on the S&P and the Nasdaq, following a disappointing forecast. Major indexes in China, Japan, and India were also lower. The shares had gained around 40 percent this year ahead of the earnings release.
