Intel CEO Brian Krzanich quits Trump council over muted Charlottesville response

Mr Trump, who is under increasing pressure to explicitly condemn the white supremacist and hate groups involved, lashed out nearly immediately at Merck chief executive Kenneth Frazier on Twitter, saying that because of his resignation, the pharmaceutical executive "will have more time to LOWER RIPOFF DRUG PRICES!"

After Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier, one of America's most prominent black CEOs, quit the council earlier Monday, Trump lashed out at him on Twitter. Those that did reinforced their support for diversity and opposition to bigotry while stressing the value of being engaged with the president on business matters.

But notably, not one executive on any of the president's various councils said anything directly about the president, nor resigned either in solidarity with Frazier or in protest of Trump's words.

"I resigned because I want to make progress, while many in Washington seem more concerned with attacking anyone who disagrees with them", he said.

Still, most corporate leaders continue walking the narrow line, working with the Trump administration to help shape policies while aiming not to alienate customers and shareholders who oppose Trump.

Later Monday night, Mr. Krzanich of Intel resigned from the council, saying: "I resigned to call attention to the serious harm our divided political climate is causing to critical issues, including the serious need to address the decline of American manufacturing".

Peters, Stabenow Statement on NAFTA Renegotiation Talks
He noted that NAFTA has benefited many Americans, such as farmers, and said the U.S., Canada and Mexico have a strong friendship. However, the summary of objectives, a document that outlines the USA position, for the NAFTA renegotiation leaves room for hope.

Indeed, Trump's vitriol against Frazier and Merck - a company that depends on the government as a buyer for many of its drugs - will perhaps have an even greater chilling effect on other CEOs who may consider speaking out.

Mark Fields, former CEO of Ford Motor Co., left the board when he stepped down from his CEO position in May.

Summers also praised Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank for leaving the manufacturing council later Monday. A spokesperson said the company is no longer a member of the council.

"I joined the American Manufacturing Council because I believed it was important for Under Armour to have an active seat at the table and represent our industry".

Paul announced Tuesday morning on Twitter that he is "resigning from the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative because it's the right thing for me to do". "We remain resolute in our potential and ability to improve American manufacturing", said Plank. Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old, was killed when a OH man who joined largely white men chanting "We will not be replaced" drove his auto into counterprotests. I hope others on the council - including Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase, Jack Welch of G.E. and Denise Morrison of Campbell - follow their lead. Plank did not specifically mention Trump or Charlottesville, but said his company will focus on promoting "unity, diversity and inclusion" through sports.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk left the group earlier this year after Trump pulled out of the Paris climate agreement. The initiative was designed to advice the president on ways to create more manufacturing jobs in the United States.
