How to Make a Pinhole Projector to Watch Solar Eclipse

NASA explains how to turn an ordinary cereal box into a pin-hole viewer that will let you watch the solar eclipse unfold without any damages to your eyesight.

Stay safe and still enjoy the sun's stellar shows by creating your very own pinhole camera. To make it, you cut the pizza box in half, put a one-inch round hole in the top piece, and tape a piece of foil over the hole.

Since it is too risky to look at the sun during an eclipse with the naked eye, eclipse enthusiasts must use protection.

For the risk of severely damaging your eyes, you never want to look directly at the sun.

Using the pin, punch a small hole in the center of one of your pieces of paper.

A meteorologist from CBS station in North Carolina offers simple directions on making an eclipse viewer with an empty box of Cheerios, Corn Flakes, or anything else you have handy. Cut the top of your cereal box so that there are two open rectangles. "This makes it easier to see the projected image", NASA advises.

NASA has come up with ingenious low-tech and cost-friendly ideas to make sure people can look at the once-in-a-century eclipse while also preserving their eyesight, according to The Washington Post.

The total solar eclipse is the first over any part of the United States since 1979 - and the first over the entire continent since 1918 - but it will be travelling so fast you couldn't even chase it in a supersonic jet.

"During an eclipse, people want to look at the sun, and that is obviously unsafe", Dr. Lawrence "Doc" Pilgrim said. On a white piece of paper or white cardboard, trace the bottom of the box. For one square, cover the hole in foil and tape it down. Look through the other hole in the lid to see the eclipse action - during the eclipse you'll see the moon biting a chunk from the sun. "You don't look directly at the sun".
