Guam under threat: Can the U.S. shoot down North Korean missiles?

Before speaking to Mr Calvo, Mr Trump told reporters in New Jersey that he believed Guam would be "very safe" and threatened North Korea with "big, big trouble" if it launched an attack.

In an editorial on Saturday, North Korea's Minju Joson newspaper said that the US "finds itself in an ever worsening dilemma, being thrown into the grip of extreme security unrest by the DPRK".

Japan said on Saturday it has installed anti-missile systems in several parts of the country following North Korea's threat to launch four ballistic missiles towards the American island of Guam.

KCNA said on Wednesday a mass rally was held in Pyongyang to support the government.

When it comes to North Korea, the USA military has been "locked and loaded" for years.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump doubled down on his statement that he would unleash "fire and fury like the world has never seen" if Pyongyang continued its threats, saying in a tweet that "military solutions" were "locked and loaded" for use against North Korea.

The territory's governor, Eddie Baza Calvo, said he spoke with Trump and the President's chief of staff, John Kelly, on Saturday. It also said that the two "reiterated their mutual commitment to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

Trump Abandons Plan for Council on Infrastructure
At the start of the year he said he was planning the council and named two well known NY property developers to lead the group. By the end of the presser, Trump was all but begging reporters to ask an infrastructure question.

Mr Trump praised the scenic beauty of the island, which is roughly 3379 kilometres southeast of Pyongyang.

"They don't have the ability to hit us because we can shoot it down." said Ellison.

Trump has pushed China to pressure North Korea to halt a nuclear weapons program that is nearing the capability of targeting the United States. He says USA ships in the area can also destroy incoming missiles.

The Chinese foreign ministry said Xi urged Trump to avoid "words and deeds" that would "exacerbate" the already-tense situation, exercise restraint and seek a political settlement. "They will be met with fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before".

Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged Saturday to do "everything, to the best of my ability", to protect his nation's people as tensions escalate over North Korea's plans to send missiles over Japan toward Guam. The island is also home to a large United States military presence, a fact that has led to tension with some local residents, particularly those of the indigenous Chamorro community.

"So with all the criticism going on over there, from a guy that's being targeted, we need a president like you, so I'm just so thankful, and I'm glad you're holding the helm, sir", Mr Calvo said on the call, playing to the President's ego.
