Flood In The State Causes 14000 Crores Of Loss, 152 Reported Dead

So far, there are reports of 152 deaths due to various causes like drowning, snake bites etc in the state in the ongoing floods. The Centre should look at it, Ms Banerjee said the DVC and Farakka authorities also should take care for dredging the river beds so that water flows properly without flooding the human habitation. According to her, dredging is not done by the Damodar Valley Corporation in Farakka and Durgapur. She claimed that the flood was caused by overflow of rivers.

Boats have become the only way of patrolling the borders in these areas.

"About 152 people have died in the state due to floods and 1.5 crore people including 45 lakh in Malda, South Dinajpur and North Dinajpur districts have been affected". The CM also assured the people of relief aid and rehabilitation at the earliest.

"The central government has provided aid packages worth Rs. 2,000 crore each to Gujarat and Assam. It is a legitimate demand and we believe that we will get it", Banerjee said after holding a meeting with state and district officials in Malda district. But fury of the floods is no less in Bengal than in Gujarat and Assam. She said her government would soon send a comprehensive report on flood situation and damages to the Union government for consideration of monetary help to tide over the situation. She was speaking to reporters in Malda after visiting of flood-hit areas. The Chief Minister gave assurance that there will be no paucity of relief materials to the flood affected-people from the state government.

Banerjee directed the officials to ensure there was enough stock of medicines to tackle any outbreak of diseases once the water level came down.

The flood situation in northern West Bengal had overall improved, with the exception of the Malda district where almost five blocks were still inundated by the rising Mahananda River waters. "It is justified", she told the mediapersons.

Floods have wreaked havoc in the Cooch Behar, South Dinajpur, North Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Malda districts of north Bengal.

They reported that the Mahananda was flowing 1.5 meters above the extreme danger level in the English Bazar area, while other rivers in the area have also breached the danger level.

She denied reports of lack of flood relief material and said that adequate relief material was being supplied.
