Civilians Killed as Mortar Mines Hit Residential Area in Northern Afghanistan

"We are deeply concerned by the harrowing reports of civilians being killed and atrocities being committed", UNAMA chief Tadamichi Yamamoto said.

A spokesman for the USA military in Kabul said officials were aware of the reports but would not comment immediately.

"There was zero chance of civilian casualties", the statement adds.

On July 24, Afghan officials said, nine civilians were killed in a US airstrike on a prayer ceremony held in Haska Meena district by relatives of Islamic State members who had previously been killed.

The governor of the Haska Meena District said that the attacks targeted vehicles trying to get out of the area, and that eight of the slain were all members of the same family.

Guam adviser urges calm after North Korea threat
Japan's ability to destroy North Korean missiles in its airspace as they are ascending has been called into question. Tourists walk through a shopping district in Tamuning, Guam - the nearest U.S. territory to North Korea.

This is the second strike in the last few weeks in the district which killed civilians.

"The militants were observed loading weapons into a vehicle and were under surveillance until the vehicle was destroyed by an airstrike", Purtiman said. "The strike was conducted in the middle of open terrain".

USA forces in Afghanistan on Friday denied allegations by Afghan officials that a US airstrike killed 16 civilians in eastern Afghanistan. They have been regularly targeting Islamic State insurgents who control several districts in restive Nangarhar.

Casualties among Afghan civilians, especially women and children, have risen to a record this year, according to a recent United Nations report. Women and children were among the victims.

"I can confirm an airstrike in Haska Mina district of Nangarhar province and it led to civilian casualties".
