Chhattisgarh: BJP leader arrested after cows die at government-aided shelter

A team of veterinary doctors found 70 cow carcasses at Phoolchandra Goshala in Godmarra village and 20 at Mayuri Goshala in Rano. Latest reports suggest that cow shelter director and state BJP leader Harish Verma, who has been arrested in the case, used the skin of dead cows to make food for fishes. Around 500 bovines were housed in the government-aided shelter home.

Dhamda block sub-divisional magistrate Rajesh Patre, after visiting the cow shelter owned by senior BJP leader Harish Verma Patre, confirmed the deaths and said that that the cows died either due to "starvation or lack of proper care". The BJP leader, however, attributed the mass death of cows to the collapse of a wall in the shelter. He said that the cow shelter was housing 400 cows more than its estimated capacity.

Verma, however, has been promptly held, and according to the police sources quoted in the HT report, "He was arrested on Friday evening after being charged under sections 4 and 6 of Chhattisgarh Agricultural Cattle Preservation act -2004, Section 11 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 and Section 409 of Indian Penal Code (IPC)". The incident prompted the Chief Minister Raman Singh for an enquiry into the matter. We do not know how many cows have died. I had intimated the government many a time that I am not able to feed them, but all went in vain. "I am not guilty for the deaths". More than Rs 10 lakh meant for the gaushala is pending with the government but they have not granted till now. "As per the complainant, Verma didn't utilize the grant properly and he also failed to take proper care of the cattle".

Bemetara (Chhattisgarh), Aug 19 (ANI): After the death of over 200 cows in Chhattisgarh's Rajpur village, another incident came into light from state's Bemetara district. The team alleged that the cows died due to the lack of proper facilities in the shelter.
