BBB CONSUMER TIPS: Don't let eclipse blind you to scams

While there is a lot of excitement surrounding the total solar eclipse that will cross into North Georgia on August 21, many have expressed concerns about eye safety when looking directly at the sun during this once-in-a-generation event.

California, a state full of both sunshine and solar panels, could be affected quite a bit too, even if it won't experience a total eclipse.

A solar eclipse occurs when the earth, new moon, and sun align and the moon's shadow "touches" the earth.

In fact, people are so excited, many stores around our area are completely sold out of eclipse glasses a week and a half ahead of time. If you have the opportunity to go see the total eclipse, do it! This is the result of the last remaining little bits of sun shining between mountains and through deep valleys on the edge of the moon, and is called Baily's Beads. The odds of that seem astronomical, pardon the pun. The total solar eclipse will travel from OR to SC and cross over 21 national park units and 7 trails.

So where can you find these NASA-approved eclipse glasses? In Tennessee, the best places to see it are LaFayette and Cookeville. The moon will move past the sun by 3:46 p.m. When the sun is totally blocked, its outer atmosphere (the corona) becomes visible, and it has been observed as big jets and streamers of light rippling around the sun. The temperature starts dropping. You can see the moon's shadow moving toward and then away from you across the landscape.

Stocks in the Spotlight - Editas Medicine, Inc. (EDIT)
Zacks Investment Research lowered Editas Medicine from a "buy" rating to a "hold" rating in a research note on Tuesday, July 18th. The company reported ($0.65) earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter, missing analysts' consensus estimates of ($0.64) by $0.01.

NASA says that the only safe way to look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers. According to the guide found below, Corsicana will experience a 75 to 80 percent coverage of the sun.

The easiest way to watch safely if you don't have the eclipse glasses is to use a pinhole projector.

Unfortunately, the AAS also confirmed that seeing the logo of the International Organization for Standardization on a pair of sunglasses will not suffice anymore to see if a solar viewer is safe to use. If the solar filter shows any signs of damage, they are not safe to use. It's a long duration event so spread your looks out. It will end in Charleston, South Carolina at 2:48 p.m.

Eclipse viewing glasses also will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis on the library plaza, the news release said. In addition, the UNG Gainesville campus and Lanier Technical College will be giving away glasses to students August 21 just before the eclipse starts.
