Bank of England says animal fat will stay in banknotes

British vegetarians will have to carry on using United Kingdom banknotes that contain traces of animal fat after the Bank of England decided not to switch to another product following controversy late previous year.

"The Bank has had to balance these responses against its other public duties and priorities as well as the other evidence gathered over the past months", a spokesman said.

It says the only viable alternative would have been to use chemicals derived from palm oil but this raised "questions about environmental sustainability".

In the statement, the bank said it "fully recognizes the concerns raised" and had "not taken this decision lightly".

"Value for money was also a consideration in the Bank's decision".

The additional cost of switching to a new type of production had risen to about £16.5m over the next 10 years, according to the Bank.

The Bank launched a public consultation, receiving responses from 3,554 people.

It added: "The case for moving to polymer banknotes remains compelling".

"Polymer is also stronger than cotton-paper and so notes will last longer, remain in better condition and deliver environmental benefits".

Campaigners launched a petition last autumn after it emerged that the new plastic £5 note contained traces of an animal product derivative.

After facing backlash from vegans, Hindus and Sikhs at the use of animal products in the new plastic £5 note when it went into circulation past year the Bank launched a public consultation.

Britain's new bank notes are harder to forge than their predecessors.

A "trace" amount usually means 0.01 per cent of the product.

"As a effect of not allowing the 5 pound notes in the temple environment, numerous temples had seen a huge decrease in their temple economy, which relies totally on donations in order to operate", it had said.

Following an "extensive consultation" and "careful and serious consideration" the Bank has today confirmed this stance.
