Unmanned runaway speedboat slams into another vessel at 30mph injuring ten people

Conservation officers reported Steuben County 911 emergency dispatch received a call at 7:13 p.m. Saturday saying several people had been involved in a boating accident at Lake Gage and still were in the water with serious injuries.

IN conservation officers, members of the Steuben County Sheriff's Department, Steuben County EMS, the Orland Fire Department and the Parkview Samaritan Helicopter were all deployed to the scene at just after 7pm on Saturday (15 July).

The boat's driver, 20-year-old Dominique Effinger, was arrested by conservation officers for Boating While Intoxicated Causing and Injury and being a Minor in Possession of Alcohol.

Alcohol was found to be a factor in the accident.

Four of the people who were thrown from the boat were seriously injured- one with a skull fracture, another lost part of an arm.

Others with less serious injuries were transported to Cameron Memorial Hospital in Angola. Conservation officers warned residents on-shore to move their docked boats and clear the area as the unmanned boat circled closer to boats and docks with each pass.

Conservation officers are continuing to investigate the accident, their report said.

The boat, a Correct Craft Ski Ski Nautique, was traveling at around 30mph when it threw the passengers off.

Carlisle was eventually able to climb aboard the runaway boat and stop it before it could inflict more damage.

The Indiana officer who finally brought an out-of-control boat to a stop said the incident shows just how risky drunken boating can be. As it neared shore, Conservation Officer Jake Carlile threw a rope around the boat's propeller in an attempt to get it slowed down. But the runaway boat struck a dock, changed direction and hit the rear of Carlile's patrol boat, disabling the DNR boat's engine. A DNR statement said an initial report to conservation officers indicated four injured, but the exact number of people injured has not been confirmed.
