Sri Lankan Navy rescue an elephant found 10 miles out to sea

A group of naval personnel saved an elephant from drowning after the animal became caught in an ocean current.

A naval Fast Attack Craft first noticed the odd anomaly in the water - an Asian elephant being dragged out into the ocean off the coast of Kokkilai, Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's navy has rescued an elephant that got into difficulties after being washed out to sea, a spokesman said, calling it a "miraculous escape".

Elephants use their trunks as a natural snorkel, and have a unique lung structure among mammals that allows them to withstand variations in pressure above and below the water.

A local rescue team of navy forces and divers operated for hours to rescue the animal.

It's not the first time the navy has rescued elephants.

Photos and video of the rescue show the poor animal nearly completely submerged in the deep water. As per the report, the elephant was dragged away by the water.

It's believed the elephant was swept out to sea while crossing the Kokkilai lagoon, a large stretch of water that lies between two areas of jungle. Subsequently, the animal was handed over to wildlife experts for treatment before returning the elephant to its life in the wild.

They are known to paddle out to distances of several kilometres from the coast and are even used by people in some countries to ferry lumber across bodies of water.
