Sportscaster and Baseball Hall of Fame's Bob Wolff Dies at 96

Until early this year, Wolff provided sports commentary for Long Island-based News 12, beginning that gig when the cable station launched in 1986. Wolff served as a mentor of sorts for Carton.

Sports broadcasting legend Bob Wolff passed away on Saturday at the age of 96 in South Nyack, New York.

Long before Bob Wolff called Don Larsen's World Series flawless game, Alan Ameche's overtime touchdown for the Baltimore Colts in the 1958 National Football League championship game and loss after loss for the old Washington Senators, he broadcast Duke baseball games for WDNC.

Wolff often said if he wasn't having fun then the audience wasn't probably having fun, which is why he played the ukulele when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.

Please listen to the full interview below.

Wolff was cited by the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest consecutive run as a broadcaster at 78 years, dating to 1939 on WDNC Radio when he was a student at Duke University. "Beyond his lifetime of professional accomplishments, he was a man of great grace and dignity, serving his country with honor, and proudly calling NY home".

"Bob Wolff's iconic, Hall-of-Fame broadcasting career was matched by his class and character", the New York Yankees said in a statement.

He was play-by-play man for the championship Knick teams of the 70s, teaming with Cal Ramsey on TV broadcasts. Through his eight decades of work over the air, Wolff became one of just two professionals (along with Curt Gowdy) to ever be honored by both the Baseball and Basketball Halls of Fame.

"In addition to leaving behind an unmatched body of work, his spirit carries on in hudnreds of broadcasters he mentored and the millions of fans he touched".

From 1947-1960, Wolff was the voice of the Washington Senators.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Hoy; his sons, Rick and Robert; daughter, Margy Clark; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
