Senegal stadium crash kills eight

Eight people were killed and more than 40 were seriously injured after clashes at the end of a League Cup final football match at Demba Diop Stadium in Dakar, Senegal on Saturday.

Police responded with tear gas, prompting panicking fans to climb over a low wall at Demba Diop Stadium.

The fighting broke out after Stade de Mbour's 2-1 victory in extra time over Union Sportive Ouakam.

Sports Minister Matar Ba said a young girl was among the dead. "We knew exactly that some of our own had lost their lives because the wall fell directly on to people".

The wall collapsed as people prepared to leave after the game.

At least 60 people were injured in the fracas and were evacuated to hospitals in the capital city of senegal, has added the minister, who has vowed to "take strong measures to ensure that such an event never happens again in Senegal". "Those responsible will be identified and sanctioned", Sall on Twitter, in French.

"What I find bad is that we have this kind of final in this kind of stadium where there isn't enough security", Diouf said.

At least 17 died in a stampede at a soccer stadium in Angola in February.

An AFP journalist who attended the match described a stadium full to bursting with people for the long-awaited clash between local teams US Ouakam and Stade de Mbour.
