Round 1: Brexit talks start in Brussels with 20 months to go

They want to frustrate Brexit. The EU has demanded Britain to pay some 60 billion euros (70 billion USA dollars) as exit fee. Asked point blank on Monday if the cabinet was "split on Brexit", Johnson simply said he was pleased negotiations had begun and then defended the offer May has made to protect the rights of European Union citizens in Britain.

Mr Hammond lifted the lid on cabinet feuding by claiming damaging stories about him had come from fellow ministers out to get him because he is pushing for a softer Brexit.

He defended his position on Sunday and hit back at his critics.

During four days of talks the two sides hope to make progress on key issues surrounding Britain's withdrawal, including citizens' rights and its exit bill, so that talks can move on to discuss a future trade deal later this year.

It is understood that Mr Davis said in private: "If Manchester United played Real Madrid, you wouldn't let Real pick the referee".

'Protecting the rights of all our citizens is the priority for me going into this round and I'm clear that it's something we must make real progress on'.

Najma Heptullah can be Narendra Modi and Amit Shah's googly candidate to replace Vice-President Hamid Ansari. The decision to name Gandhi was taken at a meeting of the joint Opposition held at New Delhi on Tuesday.

A weekend of media briefings from competing factions within the Conservatives did little to reassure companies, though most cabinet ministers appear now to accept that there needs to be what May calls an "implementation phase".

"I do think on many fronts it would be helpful if my colleagues - all of us - focused on the job at hand", he told the BBC.

In a sign British ministers are coming round to the European Union view that a trade deal can at best be sketched in outline over the next 20 months, two members of May's cabinet who were on opposing sides of the Brexit referendum debate both said they expected some transitional phase to start in 2019 to smoothe the passage from full European Union membership to a final free trade pact. This was "more a technical argument" and still had to be negotiated with the EU, Fox said.

The prime minister had made similar pronouncements before, but the statement to MPs and peers carried weight in Brussels.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who was also in Brussels, emphasized the British offer on citizens' rights, calling it "very fair" and "serious".

Discussions on the politically charged issue of the Irish border issue will be led by Sabine Weyand, Barnier's deputy, and Olly Robbins, permanent secretary of the department for exiting the EU.
