PC sales suffer as Apple takes a beating on its home turf

The figures for Q2 show that 61.1 million PCs were shipped globally, which is down 4.3% on the same quarter a year ago.

Gartner maintained that the PC industry is in the midst of a 5 year slump, and said the latest figures represented an 11th straight quarter of declining shipments. Worldwide, HP's shipments grew 3.3 percent.

Lenovo, which saw an 8.4 per cent decline in shipments, placed second, while Dell placed third with a slight 1.4 per cent increase in sales.

In the Q2 report, HP's PC shipments were 12.6 million with a market share of 20.8 percent. Apple's PC market share was 6.7% past year, but now, it has inched up to 6.9%.

Factors hitting PC sales included growing demand for Google-backed Chromebook laptops that essentially act as gateways to services and computing power hosted in the internet cloud, according to Gartner.

"The approach to higher component costs varied by vendor", the statement reads.

The traffic also led Target to upgrade its outlook on comparable-store sales, with the company now expecting a "modest increase". Finally, Evercore ISI restated an "outperform" rating on shares of Delta Air Lines in a research note on Tuesday, July 4th.

But despite losing its top spot in terms of sales, a spokesperson for Gartner said that Lenovo won't be too concerned as it makes "a strategic shift from unit share gains to margin protection". Apple, Asus and Acer take the remaining spots, and each saw a decline in PC shipments during Q2. The company saw its U.S. shipments fall 40.7% last quarter when compared with the same period in 2016.

Looking at PC sales in the United States, HP topped the market, followed by Dell and Lenovo.

Gartner's figures for second quarter shipments are all preliminary and subject to revision after the PC makers publicly release their actual numbers. HP has achieved five consecutive quarters of year-on-year growth. Gartner's data, on the other hand, showed a worldwide PC shipment decline of 4.3%.

While the overall market shrunk, HP managed to post 6.2 percent year-over-year growth for Q2, according to IDC, giving it almost 23 percent market share for the quarter. IDC also estimates that the total PC shipments for the quarter stood at 60.5 million units, a drop of 3.3%.

"Despite recent issues wrought by component shortages and its effect on system prices, we expect the momentum of commercial market replacements will contribute to eventual market growt", said IDC research manager Jay Chou.
