Multi-state lottery ticket sales to stop if state budget isn't passed

Multi-state lottery ticket sales to stop if state budget isn't passed

Lottery players will soon be unable to buy Mega Millions or Powerball tickets in Illinois due to the state's budget impasse, Illinois Lottery officials said Tuesday.

Employees at the Four Way Quick Stop fear, until the state figures out a budget, lottery sales will only get worse.

Although you might remember we've actually been down this road before. House Speaker Mike Madigan said the new budget has a decreased spending plan, by about two-and-a-half billion dollars, although residents would see an increase when it comes to their income tax rate. That being said, if a budget is not passed by Friday, Wednesday could be your last chance to play Powerball in IL.

That meant the holders of 3,900 winning tickets had to postpone collecting more than $112 million in spoils. Mega Millions sales are slated to end Friday night at 9:45.

Illinois' annual profit from Powerball and Mega Millions is about $90 million. - All active Powerball subscriptions will be cancelled after the last draw on June 28.

One of the employees is scheduled for sentencing this month, another is in custody in the USA and five others are German citizens. The scandal has cost Volkswagen more than $20 billion in criminal penalties and lawsuit settlements.

Powerball is done in IL and Mega Millions is expected to stop sales in the state Friday due to the budget impasse. The timing is unknown.

If you win the lottery in IL, you might have to be patient before you will be able to get your money.

Tickets bought before those cut off times will still be valid.

Players who have won more than $25,000 will experience delays in payment if the lottery funding is not approved by July 1.

A money maker for the state is gone for now. In 2015, the Illinois Lottery was lacking Fiscal Year 2016 appropriation authority to pay winners until December, resulting in almost 3,900 valid claims being delayed, totaling more than $112 million. - Prizes of $600 or less will continue to be paid at the Lottery's almost 8,000 retail partners. "They're real disappointed that IL is canceling their lottery but that's OK, we'll bring them here".
