Romeo passed away at the age of 77 due to lung cancer. His longtime producer partner, Peter Grunwald, said Romero's cancer was a "brief but aggressive battle".
As we all know, George Romero is responsible for our modern take on zombies after his groundbreaking film "Night of the Living Dead" redefined what a zombie is.
Ten years later Romero made Dawn Of The Dead, described by film critic Roger Ebert as "violent, brutal and appalling", as well as "savagely merciless in its satiric view of American consumer society".
All of his "dead" films up to that point had been filmed in Pittsburgh, Penn., which became Romero's adopted home after he moved there for college after being born in NY. You can see some of those below.
Romero revealed in July that he was working on "Road of the Dead" with Matt Birman, who had worked on the last three "Dead" movies, but that the project had not yet secured funding.
It also set the rules the creators of zombie flick remakes live by: Zombies move slowly, lust for human flesh and can only be killed when show in the head.
Romero - the legendary filmmaker behind Night of the Living Dead - has died. His other zombie movies include Day of the Dead (1985), Land of the Dead (2005), Diary of the Dead (2007), and Survival of the Dead (2009).
"Night of the Living Dead" was added by the Library of Congress in 1999 to its National Film Registry for works considered "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
It cost $500,000 to produce and earned $55 million, and according to Entertainment Weekly it was one of the top cult films ever. Apart from his horror movies, there were also other notable films which he created like "The Crazies", and "Season of the Witch". He attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and graduated in 1960 from the university's College of Fine Arts.
He is survived by his wife and daughter, who were by his side when he passed, according to Roe.
